Voting in Wisconsin’s gubernatorial recall election is underway and the polls will remain open until 8 p.m. CDT, but here’s a quick look at trends at the polls this morning:
- Milwaukee calls for help to handle turnout. Extra poll workers were sent to locations across the city to deal with high numbers of voters, many of them registering today.
- Presidential election turnout is expected in Madison. The Wisconsin State Journal is reporting that clerks in Madison’s Dane County have ordered enough ballots for every registered voter. The Wisconsin Government Accountability Board reports a strong voter turnout.
- Voter ID Isn’t Necessary — and Twitter Wants Voters to Know It. Voting rights advocates have taken to Twitter to remind Wisconsin voters that the state’s 2011 photo voter ID law is suspended in the courts, meaning that the controversial provision isn’t in effect. Twitter users have been tweeting and retweeting the reminder that photo ID isn’t necessary.
- ACLU reports students calling with voting issues. The Wisconsin ACLU tweeted this morning that it had received reports of students encountering problems at the polls.
- Hitching a ride to the polls. Taxi companies in Madison are offering free cab rides to polling stations.
- Early turnout strong from Gov. Scott Walker base. The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel is reporting that in the town of Pewaukee, where Walker won 2-to-1 in 2010, more than 1,300 of 4,500 registered voters went to the polls this morning.
